He was made an honorary member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was granted the Tourism Award by the Basque Government.

De música IV [On Music IV] was installed at Münsterplatz in Bonn, coinciding with the solo exhibition being held there at the Kunstmuseum Bonn.

Begirari V [Sentinel V] was installed in Hombroich.

A retrospective exhibition was held at the Gallerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris, which then travelled to the Kunsthalle Würth in Schwäbisch Hall.

He had solo shows in Pamplona and Frankfurt, and Elkartu at the Museum Schloss Moyland in Bedburg-Hau.

Chillida Prints-4 decades was first exhibited at Ernst Barlach Haus in Hamburg, and then travelled to the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar in Germany, and the Museum Liner Appenzell in Switzerland.

The Académie d'Architecture in Paris granted him the Medal of the Arts for his whole body of work. The Institució del Mèrit Humanitari in Barcelona awarded him the Gran Cruz al Mérito Humanitario.

Exhibitions of his work were held at Staatliche Moritzburg Halle, the Saarland Museum in Saarbrucken, and at the Stiftung Wilhem Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg.

The retrospective exhibition held at the Kunsthalle Würth travelled to the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey and the Palacio de Bellas Artes de México. Another retrospective was held at the Centro Cultural Bancaja, in Valencia.

The artist passed away on 19 August in his home of San Sebastian.
