1991
He was awarded the Praemium Imperiale of the Japan Art Association alongside the film director Ingmar Bergman, the painter Balthus, and the architect Gae Aulenti.
He was made a member of the Europa Akademie.
Solo exhibitions at the Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin, the Kunsthalle Basel, Barcelona, Frankfurt, and Leon.
The exhibition Chillida: Escala humana was held at the Palacio de Revillagigedo in Gijon, Sala Rekalde in Bilbao, and the following year at the Centro Cultural Consolidado de Caracas, Venezuela.
Chillida íntimo was on show at the Calcografía Nacional in Madrid.
1992
He ias awarded the Gold Medal by the City Council of San Sebastian and the Orden de Andrés Bello.
First major retrospective in his hometown, Chillida en San Sebastián, was held at the Palacio de Miramar.
The concrete sculpture Monumento a la tolerancia [Monument to Tolerance] was installed at the Muelle de la Sal in Sevilla.
Helsinki, commissioned by the University of Helsinki, is placed at the Porthania Piazza.
Solo exhibitions were held in Rome, Sevilla, Tokyo, Antibes, London, and Châteauroux.
1993
He was made a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge and of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York.
Retrospective exhibition at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, curated by Thomas Messer.
Chillida im geistlichen Raum is held at Cologne’s Sankt Peter cathedral, organised by Father Mennekes. The city’s Dioceses Museum then acquired three felt “gravitaciones” from the series Homenaje a San Juan de la Cruz [Homage to St John of the Cross].
The sculpture Diálogo-Tolerancia [Dialogue-Tolerance], commissioned by the city of Munster, was installed to commemorate the Peace of Westphalia.
1994
He was made an honorary member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid.
Puerta de música [Music Door] was installed at the Parque de San Domingos de Bonaval, in Santiago de Compostela.
Estela a Rafael Ruiz Balerdi [Stele for Rafael Ruiz Balerdi] was placed at the Pico del Loro in San Sebastian.
The Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de Madrid organised a show of the artist under the direction of the engineer José Antonio Fernández Ordóñez.
The book Brossa i Chillida. A peu pel llibre is published. Solo exhibitions in Bayreuth, Maguncia, and Barcelona.
1995
He was awarded the Premio AECA at ARCO, Madrid, and the Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Mérito in Portugal, handed by Mário Soares.
Estela a Rodríguez Sahagún [Stele for Rodríguez Sahagún] was placed at the Rodríguez Sahagún Park in Madrid.
A graphic work exhibition was held at the Casa de la Moneda in Madrid, curated by José Miguel Ullán, and En el límite at the Synagoge Stommeln in Pulheim.
Solo exhibitions in Vitoria, Paris, Leverkusen, Seoul, Salzburg, London, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Mahon, and Vienna.

He received the Jack Goldhill Award for Sculpture from the Royal Academy of Arts in London for his sculpture Arco de la libertad [Arch of Freedom].
Named Doctor honoris causa by the University of Alicante.
La Accademia Internazionale d'Arte Moderna made him Membro dell’Albo d'Oro del Senato Accademico.
He was also made an honorary member of the Instituto Vasco de Criminología, in San Sebastian.
Fundación Focus nominated him as «Greatest Spaniard in the Art World» during 1995.
He was awarded the Premio Cultura Viva in Madrid and the Racimo de Oro de la Rioja Alavesa in Lapuebla de Labarca.
The Sinclair-Haus in Bad Homburg acquired Besarkada X [Embrace X].
Lizardiren leihoa [Lizardi’s Window] gifted by the artist in 1983 as an homage to the poet, was installed in Tolosa.
He presented in Fuerteventura his project for the mountain Tindaya.
The Bellerive Museum in Zurich set up an exhibition entitled Sculptures in clay, which then travelled to Sundern, Düsseldorf, and Lund.
He participated in the Museum Würth’s exhibition Plätze und Platzzeichen, with works by Anthony Caro, Robert Jacobsen, and Bernhard Luginbühl, as well as in the exhibition in homage to poet Yves Bonnefoy at the Musée Jenisch Vevey.

He was named Doctor honoris causa by the University of the Basque Country as proposed by the Engineering School.
He received the Universal Basque Award, along with Monseñor Laboa, granted by the Basque Government. He was also awarded the Premio Prestigio Rioja and the Premio Europeo de Comunicación Jordi Xifra y Heras in Girona.
The steel sculpture Jaula de la libertad [The Cage of Freedom] was installed in the city of Tréveris.
Elogio del hierro III [In Praise of Iron III] was installed in Bilbao, and the alabaster piece Camino hacia la paz [The Path to Peace] at the Buen Pastor cathedral in San Sebastian.
He created four engravings for the book L’Écriture ou la Vie [Literature or Life] by Jorge Semprún.
The exhibition Chillida und die Musik opened at Sinclair-Haus in Bad Homburg. Besarkada X was installed in its gardens. The catalogue for the exhibition included an interview of the artist with Mario Terés.
The show Chillida-Leku was held at La Pedrera, in Barcelona, organised by Daniel Giralt-Miracle. Other solo exhibitions included one at the Remba Gallery in Los Ángeles, the Tasende Gallery in La Jolla, the Meyer-Ellinger Gallery in Frankfurt, and the Museo Nivola in Orani.
An exhibition around the Tindaya project, organised by Kosme de Barañano and Lorenzo Fernández Ordóñez, was presented first in Puerto Rosario and then at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld and the Museo de Euskal Herria in Guernica.
He participated in the collective exhibition Experiment en ruimte, with works by Picasso, González, and Miró, at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
1998
He was granted the Lifetime Achievement Award by the lnternational Sculpture Center in Washington.
He was awarded La Rosa d'Oro in Palermo and the National Print Award by the Calcografía Nacional in Madrid for his work Guggenheim III. He was also given the Gold Medal of Gipuzkoa.
The speech he gave on occasion of his appointment as Doctor honoris causa by the Engineering School in Bilbao was published.
The artist book Hommage à Johann Sebastian Bach [Homage to Johann Sebastian Bach], published by Edouard Weiss, was presented at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, and later exhibited in a variety of European cities.
Mural G-333 was installed at the square outside the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona.
A great retrospective, Chillida 1948-1998, was held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, and the following year at the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao.
Chillida. Elogio del hierro was on show at IVAM, Valencia, and Eduardo Chillida. Mark Rothko wass held at the Galería Elvira González in Madrid, with a catalogue by Kosme de Barañano.

1999
He was awarded the Eusko Ikaskuntza-Laboral Kutxa Prize for the Humanities, Culture, Arts and Social Sciences.
The presentation of the artist book in homage to Parménides, Le poème, was held at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.
The book Hommage à Johann Sebastian Bach [Homage to Johann Sebastian Bach], was exhibited at the Bach-Museum Leipzig, the Kupferstichkabinett Dresden, and the Kunstkreis Konradshöhe in Munich.
The collective exhibition Spanische Kunst am Ende des Jahrhunderts was held at the Museum Würth in Künzelsau.
Solo exhibition Murales was set up at the Galerie Lelong in Paris. Other solo shows took place in Frankfurt, Palma de Mallorca, Nuoro, Munich, Saarbrucken, Milan, A Coruña, Krems, Colonia, Madrid, and Mendrisio.
2000
He was appointed Doctor honoris causa by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The same university held the exhibition Chillida ante la filosofía.
The University of the Basque country planted a tree as a symbol of his appointment as Doctor honoris causa in the town of Leioa.
He was awarded the Piepenbrock Preis für Skulptur in Berlin.
The artist’s museum, Chillida-Leku, opened in Hernani, Gipuzkoa.
The Plaza Eduardo Chillida was inaugurated in front of the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao.
The sculpture Berlín, which commemorates the German reunification, was installed in the grounds of the German Chancellery in Berlin.
Enparantza II (Homenaje a San Ignacio) [Square II (Homage to Saint Ignatius)] was installed at the Sanctuary of Loyola, Gipuzkoa.
The book Anthony Caro, Eduardo Chillida: Sculptors Talking, published by Art of This Century and Annely Juda Fine Art, was presented at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London.
