Eduardo Chillida, the Artist
A universal and Basque artist
“I’m one of those people who believe—and this is very important to me—that humans are from a particular place. The ideal is really that we’re from one place, that we have roots in one place, but that our arms extend outward to the world: that the ideas of all cultures matter to us. All places are perfectly suitable to those suited to them. Me, here, in my Basque country, I feel at home, like a tree planted firmly in its terrain, tied to its territory but with its branches open to the world.”

Chillida, Eulogy of the Horizon
"All men are brothers. Doesn’t that make the horizon our common homeland? Isn’t the present in which we live another boundary, another limit, another place without dimension, like the horizon? All of these unanswered questions and more belong to nature; they are what lead my work to probe nature and its laws for all that, despite being so overt, is so difficult to find."
Chillida Leku
"One day, I dreamed of a utopia: of finding a space where my sculptures could rest and where people could walk through them as though in a forest.”
